This year, we're embracing the festivities by sharing a delightful recipe for homemade glazed donuts. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just starting out, this recipe is perfect for bringing a bit of sugary joy to your day.

The Sweet History of National Donut Day

National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. Today, it’s a beloved tradition that brings people together to enjoy this iconic pastry. What better way to celebrate than by making your own donuts from scratch?

Homemade Glazed Donuts Recipe

There's something incredibly satisfying about making your own glazed donuts at home. The smell of fresh dough frying, the sight of the golden rings cooling on a rack, and the sweet taste of the glaze melting in your mouth—it's an experience like no other. Here's our tried-and-true recipe for perfect glazed donuts:

Ingredients:

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

2 tablespoons warm water (110°F)

3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large egg

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Oil for frying

Glaze:

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, warm milk, sugar, melted butter, salt, egg, and 1 cup of flour. Beat until smooth. Gradually stir in remaining flour to make a soft dough.

Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.

Punch down dough and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with a floured donut cutter. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375°F. Fry donuts, a few at a time, until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels.

For the glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip warm donuts in glaze and place on a wire rack to set.
